Best Vampire Anime Shows

By , About.com Guide

Looking for anime shows with just a little more "teeth" to them? Well, then this is the list for you. Here's my top picks for great vampire anime shows.

1. Black Blood Brothers

Not so long ago, a new breed of vampires arose. Known as the Kowloon Children, these vamps declared war on humans and the result was a brutal showdown. Today, vampires and humans are trying to put the past behind them but there are some who just can't let it go. As an "old blood" Jiro hopes to make it to the Special Zone with his younger brother, Kotaro. But before he can cross the bridge to safety, he must face some painful reminders of a very ugly past.

Rated TV-MA.

2. Blood: The Last Vampire

The human race has a new enemy known as teropterids, nasty, vampire-like creatures whose sole purpose is to drink human blood. To save the population from this horrible fate, slayers begin to emerge, dedicated to making the teropterids history. Of these slayers, Saya is the best there is... but can she handle what's waiting?

Rated 17 & Up

3. Hellsing

Hellsing is a tale of a group of vigilante vamps, on the hunt for a new and brutal synthetic form of vampire that was created by a mysterious Nazi organization known only as "Millennium". It's dark, it's creepy and it's got lots and lots of excellent vampire action.

4. Trinity Blood

Often referred to as Trigun with fangs, Trinity Blood is a supernatural thriller produced by none other than the brilliant minds at GONZO. The story takes place 500 years after the biblical Armageddon and the all is well in the world... at least on the surface.

But lurking in the shadows is an ancient battle, one between the Vatican and the vampires. And if this weren't interesting enough, the Vatican relies on a special ops groups known as Ax to defeat the vampires... one of the Ax members is Abel Nightroad who - and here's the twist - is a vamp himself and lives on the blood of other fangers.

5. Vampire Princess Miyu

This is an older one to be sure but still well worth the mention. Vampire Princess Miyu is the story of a 13 year-old girl - Miyu - who lives an ordinary and normal life until she meets Larva, a Shinma who has been sent to kill her. He takes his time however and Miyu's vampire awakens... instead of dying, she bites his neck and makes Larva her servant.

As it turns out, Miyu's parents are both vamps as well and after they are captured and locked in a room of glass, Miyu becomes the Guardian of The Dark, hunting down the Shinma and returning them to their realm.

6. Moon Phase

From the creative mind of Arima Keitaro, Moon Phase is the story of Kouhei Midou, an average boy in a not-so-average family. Living with his grandfather, Ryouhei Midou, (who is also a retired exorcist), Kouhei wants desperately to solve the mysterious disappearance of his mother. He and his grandfather believe it has something to do with their only clue - vampires. And there's plenty of them to go around in Kouhei's world. There's Hazuki, a mysterious girl who lives in the Schwarz Quelle Castle that Kouhei is researching. Kouhei was her first bite but interestingly, he is immune to vampire bites and their magical control.

7. Vampire Knight

Vampire Knight has been a most popular vampire manga ever since VIZ Media debuted it in their ShojoBeat Magazine. Although this anime hasn't made it's way to the U.S. yet, it has been released in Japan and VIZ Media has already picked up distribution rights so, it's only a matter of time, and therefore, makes my list.

Vampire Knight is the story of Cross Academy. The day class is filled with normal students while the night class hosts nothing but vampires. The Guardians of Cross Academy have but one job: to keep the vamps away from the human students.

8. Vampire Hunter D

Taking place in a post-nuclear future, Vampire Hunter D is the story of a half breed (half human, half vamp) named, appropriately "D". This manga series was so popular that two anime movies were made - Vampire Hunter D in 1985 and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust in 2000.

Billed by the Japanese producers as a "dark future science-fiction romance", Vampire Hunter D remains a cult classic even today.
