Ryuk is a Shinigami or "Death God". He was the original owner of the Death Note and wrote the instructions for how to use it. When he dropped it, Light Yagami found it and now Ryuk must follow Light around. Ryuk is addicted to apples (as are all Death Gods) and so Light tends to keep him well supplied in his favorite fruit.
