Q.  What is the Shadow Realm?

A.  Long ago, the Pharaohs of ancient Egypt played a type of card game called the Shadow Games.  Full of magic and monsters, this game was played in an alternate reality, known as the Shadow Realm.  Here, the monsters were real and the spells deadly.  When the game grew out of control, it was locked away in the Millennium Items by one of the Pharaohs, Yami Yugi.

Now that Yugi has unlocked the powers of the Millennium Puzzle, he can play in the Shadow Realm as well.
