The Gist:
After grudgingly agreeing to assist a prodigy ghost hunter, a high school girl discovers that things really do go bump in the night.
The History:
Ghost Hunt originally began as a light novel series titled Akuryou Series that ran from 1989 to 1994. Created by Fuyumi Ono, the series was then adapted into manga form and is still ongoing.

The anime adaptation ran from October of 2006 to March of 2007 and consisted of 25 episodes. FUNimation acquired the rights to North American distribution in October of 2007.
Manga vs. Anime:
Because the manga is on-going, there are several revelations that are not included in the 25 episodes of the anime series, most notably that Gene is Naru's dead twin brother.

It has been widely speculated that a second season would be crafted to pick up where season one left off (the equivalent of novel #6) or that an OVA would be released to provide a final once-over to close all the gaps. To date, neither of these projects has been confirmed and so the anime ends at a much earlier stage of the storyline than the manga.
How To Watch:
Ghost Hunt will be released on DVD beginning on October 7, 2008 in two DVD collections - Part 1 and Part 2 (Part 2 is due out in November, 2008).

The Review:
Ghost Hunt begins with our main character Mai and some friends telling ghost stories after school. And that's essentially what this series is - a collection of ghost stories as told by the SPR, or Shibuya Psychic Research company, owned by Kazuya Shibuya, a 17 year-old prodigy ghost hunter.

Mai grudgingly agrees to help Kazuya in his research after her meddling causes an injury to his assistant. She quickly finds herself both attracted and disgusted by her new boss, so much so that she secretly begins calling him "Naru" as in "Naru the Narcissist". What Mai doesn't know is that "Naru" is actually his nickname known only by close family members.

While Kazuya mostly employs special cameras and other technological gadgets, he also possesses some psychic energy of his own which is revealed later in the series. The pair are also joined by various mediums, exorcists and other self-proclaimed psychic individuals to help solve the cases and stop reported hauntings.

Ghost Hunt is well-done with quality animation and a fairly fast-moving storyline. The plot itself is engaging and offers some great twists on childhood ghost-story folklore. Its spooky yet funny, dramatic yet romantic, making this one of the highlights in anime releases this year.

Plus, FUNimation decided to release the entire 25 episode series in two parts, each with two discs. So you can dive deeply into the series with Part 1 which contains a full 13 episodes.

Ghost Hunt Part 1 DVD hits your favorite stores on October 7, 2008.
