The Bottom Line
Darker Than Black is one of those animes that leaves you feeling really tense, if for no other reason than you're trying to figure everything out before the DVD ends. You're immediately introduced to a number of faces and then get the privilege of watching their connections unfold. And true to form, Studio Bones takes their time with the unfolding part. Even so, Darker Than Black is a fantastic watch and has all the makings to earn it a spot on my top picks for the year.

Guide Review - Darker Than Black Volume 1
Volume 1 of Darker Than Black dives right into the story with a brief meet up with the Black Reaper, an unidentified contractor who seems to be working with his own agenda. And that's really how this entire volume goes - lots of "bits" to get you hooked but not quite enough to get your hands around any one storyline. But that's okay - in fact, that part of the appeal.
The world is is a dangerous and considerably weird place, thanks to a massive yet equally mysterious event that took place years ago. As a result, there is a kind of "void" on the planet known as Hell's Gate and while people seem to know that its there, its as if they have decided not to acknowledge it. In addition, the government has decided that the less its citizens know the better and have taken up the regular practice of altering memories when necessary to keep the peace.
But regardless of what the citizens may or may not be aware of, there is some crazy stuff going on all around them. Contractors are actually a new species, one who's appearance coincided with Hell's Gate and new "stars" in the night sky. These contractors have super powers and are frequently employed by various governments as assassins.
The visual aspect of this anime is beautifully done with some really captivating backgrounds and incredible animation to the point that its almost intoxicating to watch. There's also of course, plenty of action as you would expect from a spy story and a generous amount of general mystery and intrigue to keep you tuning in. Worth the watch? Absolutely.
