It seems Hollywood has finally started to recognize the potential for anime adaptations on the big screen. From Witch Hunter Robin to Neon Genesis Evangelion, anime is becoming a popular resource for new movie ideas. In a recent Variety article, Grady Hendrix (Kaiju Shakedown) takes a quick look at the growing number of anime series turned live-action movies. Warner Bros. for example, has already wrapped up its version of "Death Note" and has scheduled a Japan-only release for June 17, 2006. James Cameron is said to be directing "Battle Angel Alita" while Screen Gems is collaborating with Sam Raimi's Ghost House and Andrew Douglas to transform "Priest" into a live-action blockbuster.
What else can we expect to see at the theaters? How about Witch Hunter Robin, Speed Racer and Sailor Moon? Perhaps the most anticipated remake is Neon Genesis Evangelion, currently being made under the brilliance of Gainax, Weta (LOTR) and ADV. Said to have a budget of approximately $100 million, this adaptation is being closely watched by fans all over the Net.
