Manhwa

By Katherine Luther, About.com

Definition: Manhwa is essentially the Korean form of comics and cartoons, including animated cartoons. The artistic style of manhwa bears a distinct likeness to manga, however manhwa characters are typically more realistic - with normal hairstyles, proportionate bodies and a noticeable Asian ethnicity.

Manhwa is also read left to right - as with traditional English books - however interestingly, it can also be written in right-to-left manga style as well. Additionally, the words manhwa, manga and the Chinese pronunciation "manhua" all use the same characters.

Although still fairly obscure in Western cultures, many manhwa titles have been presented to North American through popular manga publishing channels such as TOKYOPOP, ADV and Dark Horse.
Alternate Spellings: manhua, manga
