Once upon a time, or so many Western anime fans recall, there was a little show called Robotech that introduced them to anime. Except that it was actually called Super Dimension Fortress Macross (shown here, compare prices), and the source show for its somewhat-reworked English-language adaptation would prove to be the beginning of one of anime's most longest-lived, most loved, but also most troubled franchises.
Our newest feature at Anime.About.com traces the 30-plus-year history and multiple incarnations of this trend-setting mecha franchise. Since its introduction in the early Eighties -- hot on the heels of anime's other mecha mega-franchise, Gundam -- it's been resurrected for multiple successive generations of fandom across the world. Unfortunately, it's also fallen victim to legal tangles that make most of the franchise all but impossible to distribute legally outside of Japan.
Read up on the Macross franchise in our feature article, and feel free to speak your mind below.
