Section23, and its sublabel Sentai Filmworks -- the new incarnation of the ADV Films  / A.D. Vision anime label --  have announced their April releases for 2013. Here are some of the highlights.

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 (DVD / BD)

An original 11-episode series created in 2009, it depicts -- quite realistically and unsensationally -- the aftereffects of an 8.0-magnitude earthquake on Tokyo. The series has been lauded with awards and has already achieved a fan following. I've seen several episodes of it and am elated this series is finally getting a North American release.

Patlabor OVA (DVD / BD)

In the 1980s, the Patlabor franchise was one of the titles most people bumped into sooner rather than later during their introduction to anime. In the future, robots known as "Labors" are used for heavy work such a construction, and have proved so problematic in the wrong hands that a special police force has been created just to deal with Labor-related crimes. Co-created by Ghost in the Shell director Mamoru Oshii, this set collects the seven OVA episodes created from 1988 through 1989, originally released in the U.S. by Central Park Media.

Letter Bee Season 2 (Collection 1) (DVD)

Also known as Tegami Bachi, this fantasy series about a young boy who aspires to become a sort of super-powered deliveryman is rife with magic, action, and a richly-imagined, highly-detailed world. Currently screening on Crunchyroll, it's being brought out on DVD domestically courtesy of Sentai; this is the first part of the second half of the show.

Hiiro no Kakera (Season 1) (DVD / BD)

Based on the visual novel of the same name, this series involves a teenaged girl returning home to the village she grew up in, only to be ensnared in the complex supernatural machinations taking place behind the scenes. To make things even more complicated, she finds out she's the latest in line from her family to take up the responsibility of protecting the village from spiritual threats. Also currently screening on Crunchyroll.

Inu X Boku SS (DVD / BD)

The SS stands for "Secret Service", which is what everyone needs when they move into the haunted apartment house known as the Ayakashi-kan.  Also available on streaming via Crunchyroll, this is another show that's debuted to a massive fan following.

Other titles released from Section23 and Sentai Filmworks in April include:

  • Qwaser of Stigmata II
  • Psychic Detective Yakumo
  • Hakuoki OVA Collection
  • Place to Place
