'Astro Boy' Doesn't Impress On Opening Weekend
Despite all the hype and the merchandising, the CGI Astro Boy movie opened 6th at the box office last weekend with just over $7 million in ticket sales.
Although it did barely surpass the buzz-worthy Vampire's Assistant, there was no competing with the box office hit, Paranormal Activity which opened at the #1 spot and Saw VI which came in at #2.
To kick off its opening, Imagi Studios partnered with McDonalds to offer Astro Boy toys in a Happy Meal series. The toy line features three different Astro Boy toys as well as three other robotic figures, some of which shoot projectiles, have moving limbs or fly across the floor.
Imagi also gave Right Stuf the go-ahead to market two special edition DVDs and partnered with IDW to produce new Astro Boy comics.

I went to see Astroboy and I thought it was great. I do not get why no one really wants to watch it. It has action, drama, and the relationships are very interesting to boot. It seems to do the comic justice. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The theater was empty except me though. Why is that? If I had a little boy I would so be like “Come on son let’s go watch Astroboy!”
I saw it this weekend and loved it! I’m with you Jason – I don’t know why people aren’t just taking it for what it is… a really “nice” family-friendly show.
